Man Standing in a Field

Welcome

My work as a therapist stems from my training, and experience in helping families for more than two decades.  I am also guided by my personal understanding of the challenges involved in raising a family in Fairfield County.  My approach is relaxed, pragmatic and respectful of the strengths that all families possess, even during times of struggle. Throughout my professional life I have devoted part of my practice to working with children, teens and families.  I work closely with parents while giving pragmatic advice designed to address issues, such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, school issues and chronic illness.

My personal experience with Chronic Lyme Disease, as well as my experience of having a child whose Lyme Disease was misdiagnosed with serious consequences has led to a passion for counseling teens and young adults with Lyme Disease and other chronic illnesses.

In my work with adults, clients are supported and engaged in a process to gain the insight and awareness necessary to affect change. The knowledge gained in therapy should be a foundational step toward improving relationships, reducing anxiety and tending to other issues that may keep them from engaging in life with a sense of purpose and well-being.

My approach with couples is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy.  I work collaboratively with couples to support them as they improve their marriages by helping them to develop the interpersonal, and emotional regulation skills necessary to increase empathy, soften the tone and facilitate warmth and communication.  I encourage couples to prioritize and nurture their marriage, while they are raising children. A strong, compassionate marital bond, will permeate every aspect of family life and will strengthen the marriage and the family.

I am certified by the International Institute for Trauma & Addiction Professionals (ittap), and have broad experience in helping men and women in recovery.  I provide comprehensive assessment and expert treatment of sex addiction, pornography addiction, love addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, intimacy disorders, and relationship problems. This expertise extends to helping people who are experiencing betrayal trauma due to their spouse or partner's pornography use, sexual addiction or infidelity.

I have a certification in the use of mindfulness and psychotherapy from the  Institute for Meditation & Psychotherapy in Cambridge, MA. Those who wish to may choose to integrate instruction in mindfulness or in contemplative practices from their own tradition, to compliment and support their treatment. Through mindfulness and contemplative practices, one can learn to increase their capacity to bear difficult experience, tolerate and reduce stress, and alleviate discomfort and suffering. Scientific research has shown mindfulness-based therapeutic approaches to be effective in the treatment of stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and other issues.  In addition to my personal practice of vipassana meditation, I am certified as a Reiki Master(Usui) and have trained to teach yoga to children.
